Biography
Silk Smitha was born into a poor family in Eluru of Andhra Pradesh. She was named Vijayalaxmi at birth but at an early age changed her name to Smitha. After her first Tamil movie Vandi Chakkaram (The wheel) in 1979, Smitha began calling herself Silk after the bar girl part she played in the movie. At the age of nine Smitha left school after the fourth standard determined to become a film star and moved in with her aunt in Madras, the then centre of South Indian film industry.[1] Silk committed suicide in her house, in Madras.[2]
Career
Silk Smitha went on to star in over 200 Tamil, Malayalam, Telugu , Kannada and a few Hindi films. Her dance numbers and her bold performances in films like Moondru Mugam have made her the ultimate symbol of sensuality in Tamil, Malayalam and Telugu cinema. Her item numbers in films ike Amaran was also celebrated at the box office. Some film critics, hisorians and journalists has reffered to her as a soft porn actress.[3] One of her films - Layanam - has earned a cult status in the Indian adult film indistry, and was remade as Reshma ki Jawani.[4] Her most respected film is Moondram Pirai, remade as Sadma.[5]

As Happy Go Lucky states, Avalude Ravugal was indeed a "classic". But it was not Bharathan who made it. The movie was directed by one of Malayalam's (actually South India's) most prolific and sometimes critically acclaimed directors from the 70s and the 80s - IV Sasi. It is also interesting to note that Seema, the "Aval" (she in Malayalam) behind the "Avalude" in the title, was one of his favorite muses and later his wife too.
His IMDB page links him to a couple of Hindi movies as well. He has won a couple of National Awards, just like every other hot shot mallu director, but is also infamous for probably the only soft porn movie starring Sridevi called Pagalil Oru Nilavu!
